Eating Disorders Expert Insights and Treatment

Understanding Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions that involve serious disturbances in eating behaviors and related thoughts and emotions. These disorders can have devastating physical, psychological, and social consequences for individuals. As a psychotherapist at Integrity Behavioral Health in Tega Cay, I’m here to offer insight into the nature of these disorders, their various types, and how our treatment programs can support recovery and promote healthier relationships with food and body image

Types of Eating Disorders

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight, leading to restricted food intake and often severe weight loss. Individuals with anorexia often have a distorted body image, seeing themselves as overweight even when they are dangerously thin. This disorder can be life-threatening due to its effects on the body, including heart and bone issues, kidney problems, and more.

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa involves cycles of binge eating followed by purging, using methods such as vomiting, laxatives, fasting, or excessive exercise. This cycle can cause significant emotional distress and physical complications, including gastrointestinal problems and electrolyte imbalances.

Binge Eating Disorder

Binge eating disorder (BED) is characterized by regular episodes of eating large quantities of food quickly and to the point of discomfort, often done in secret and accompanied by feelings of shame or guilt. Unlike bulimia, binge eating does not involve purging behaviors, which can lead to obesity and related health issues.

Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED)

OSFED includes eating disorders that do not meet the full criteria for anorexia, bulimia, or BED but still involve significant eating-related issues. Examples include atypical anorexia nervosa, purging disorder, and night eating syndrome.

How Integrity Behavioral Health Can Help

At Integrity Behavioral Health, located in the heart of Tega Cay, we understand that dealing with an eating disorder is a deeply personal and often misunderstood struggle. Our approach is centered around providing compassionate and comprehensive care tailored to the unique needs of each individual.

Individual Therapy

Our team of experienced psychotherapists uses a range of evidence-based therapies, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and family-based therapy (FBT). These therapies are designed to address the psychological aspects of eating disorders, helping individuals understand and change the thought patterns that contribute to their condition.

Nutritional Counseling

Understanding and establishing a healthy relationship with food is critical. Our registered dietitians work closely with clients to create personalized eating plans that ensure nutritional needs are met, which is vital for both physical health and psychological recovery.

Group Therapy and Support Groups

Healing can be facilitated in a community context. Our group therapy sessions and support groups provide a safe space for clients to share their experiences and challenges with others who understand what they are going through, fostering a sense of community and mutual support.

Family Therapy

Eating disorders affect not just the individual but their entire family system. Our family therapy programs are designed to educate family members about eating disorders and teach them how to support their loved one’s recovery journey.

Holistic Approaches

Recognizing that recovery from an eating disorder involves more than just addressing eating behaviors, we offer holistic therapies such as yoga, meditation, and art therapy. These activities help reduce stress, improve body image, and enhance overall well-being.
